If you choose the right whole house water filter,  your family will be protected from the hazards of chlorine and its by-products.  If you choose the wrong system, then you have just wasted your money.

Chlorination is the primary reason that whole house water filters have become so popular.  Not only does it taste bad, but research has shown that it increases the risk of cancer by as much as 93%. 

It’s not just drinking chlorinated water that causes the risk.  The risk is also in showering in it and inhaling the vapors.

The best whole house water filter on the market today removes anything larger than 5 microns.  That’s about the size of a dust particle on the head of a pin.  In the majority of homes, that is sufficient.

There are only two whole house water filters on the market that include 5 micron particle filtration.  Strangely, there is a huge difference in their prices. 

One is less than a thousand dollars while another is nearly six thousand dollars.  I had to find out the difference, since both are UL certified.

It turns out that the price difference is due to specific rocks that are used in the most expensive, but not the least expensive.  They do exactly the same job and the technology is the same.  However, the company with the much more expensive model wants you to believe that the rock particles in their whole house water filter will “imbue” your shower with health-giving qualities.

I find that a little difficult to believe, but if you want to pay extra for your whole house water filters, that’s up to you.  The cost of use will be about $60 per month, as opposed to the $20 per month that we spend to maintain our whole house water filter.

The choice is yours of course.  Just remember to avoid anything that does not have a UL certification, as well as the ones that require electricity and back flushing.  They are more of a hassle and cost more to operate. Also, remember to look for micron filtration. 

Whole house water filters don’t have to be that expensive to be effective.  It’s been well worth the cost to my family.

The reverse osmosis system of whole house water filter typically does not feature the multi media block that is supposed to work as a companion to the activated granular carbon filter to guarantee the removal of all chemicals. This system will also not use a submicron filter to remove any threat posed by microscopic organisms in your water, and an ion exchange for removing toxic heavy metal traces.

Reverse osmosis whole house water filters don’t offer you the complete protection that a system incorporating this quartet of filters does. Which system seems like the better investment?

We started with the countertop unit, because the chlorine levels in our area are at times higher than what is safe to swim in.  The company says it is “safe”, but what they really mean is safe enough to pass EPA standards.

Let’s begin with the highly touted system known as reverse osmosis or RO whole house water filters. These are the most expensive systems on the market with a starting cost of $10,000 per unit. You would think that with a price tag like that they would have to be the best, right? You couldn’t be more wrong in that assumption.

They are basically nothing more than de-mineralization systems in that they will remove only ‘seeable’ particles from your water. Next on the list we have our featured $6000 system known as the Wellness whole house water filter. These units block 99% of chlorine, have the ability to remove microscopic entities, and can block lead. They don’t waste water, run on no electricity and have a large capacity. Overall it’s a good machine but not worth $6000. So why does it cost so much?

The people who bring you the Wellness whole house water filters have included in the unit “magical” Japanese stones which will bring healthy benefits to you and your family. Of course they do claim to have a practical purpose for adding the stones, which is that that have antifungal and antibacterial properties. That’s pretty funny, huh?

The next model is the Life Source whole house water filter valued at a mere $4000. This unit leaves a lot to be desired. The unit is capable of removing chlorine from your water, but doesn’t do much else. Let’s move on.

The last two of our top five run for about the same amount of money, so we’ll just group them together at $2800. Neither SKW whole house water filters nor the ECO whole house water filter offer much in the way of service at all. They will remove bacteria, but not as well as some of the other models mentioned, and SKW is not even certified despite the fact that it claims to remove chlorine.

There is my review of the top listed units on the market today. There is another system that costs around $1000 by direct purchase, and will do everything that you need it to. It, and not these overpriced models, is probably one of the best whole house water filters being sold today.

Do you have a private well?

If you have a private well, the US Environmental Protection Agency recommends that you have annual testing done to confirm the purity of your supply. Testing can be expensive, but you need a reliable and accurate record. It’s not just about “which” whole house water filters to purchase. A testing record can be used to prove that incoming industry or construction damaged your supply.

Are you serviced by a public treatment facility?

If you are serviced by a public provider your primary need is chlorine removal. You want a whole house water filter that is UL (Underwriters laboratory) or NSF certified. WQA certifications are made by a trade group that allows members to “claim” performance, without providing the data to back up their claims.

In addition to chlorine removal, the removal of microscopic particles is recommended. Those systems that filter down to 5 microns provide the cleanest drinking water. If you are concerned about cysts, you will still need a kitchen system that filters down to one micron.

How much should you pay?

If you have a private well, a whole house water filter purification system can be quite expensive. It just depends on what contaminants are present. People who live near the coast often have a high sediment and sodium content. You will likely need prefiltration and a kitchen faucet purifier.

If you are on a public water line, the best whole house water filters on the market can be purchased for less than a thousand dollars. There are more expensive brands, but there is no reason to pay $6000 for a whole house water filter when you can get the same effectiveness in a less expensive product. If you shop at a retail store, you will pay more, simply because of mark-up.

Do I really need whole house water filters?

If you have a private well, you might not need a whole house water filter. But, anyone serviced by a public treatment facility can benefit from chlorine removal.

It is a necessary evil, as it controls bacterial growth and prevents outbreaks of waterborne illnesses. But, it is bad for the digestive system. In the shower it damages the skin and hair. Cooking with and showering in chlorinated water causes the release of toxic gases.

So, you are not only filtering your water, you are also improving the quality of your home’s indoor air. If you have asthma or another chronic respiratory condition, your health will improve when you improve the quality of the air.

Your clothes will last longer and the colors will be brighter, because you are not constantly “bleaching” them. Whole house water filters can save you money and protect your health, as long as you buy the right product.
