  As far as cost goes you really should just get off your duff and go price them out I’m not trying to be rude or sarcastic, but price varies immensely depending on the size of the equipment and the quality.

  Any filter will work as well on a marine tank. For smaller tanks (under 100 gallons) it’s usually cost efficient and effective to go with a power filter. Any filter works but Canister filters are the best because, aside from being quiet and lasting forever, they hold lots of media and can provide a natural crosswise flow across the tank (unlike hanging power filters, which do the job but are more limited in effectiveness, are not as reliable, and provide an awkward, downward water flowe).

  A sump is a separate, smaller tank in which biological media (like bioballs) and any other desired media is placed. It is often used in freshwater setups as well, and sometimes even planted for even more effective filtration. The tank is drilled so that water drains down into the sump, and a pump pushes the water back up to the tank after it goes through all the media. Equipment like filters, heaters, and thermometers are put there to keep them out of sight, Sumps are more difficult and expensive and usually reserved for large tanks.

  Protein skimmers remove organic particals in the water before they can break down, which means the bio-load on the tank and filters is reduced, lending to a cleaner and healthier tank. While nano-tanks will usually do without them, they are considered a very effective and important salt water tool.
